Classy men have long been known for their love and appreciation of quality “time pieces”.

smartwatch giftYou may know these “time pieces” as watches.

Over the years watches have changed in many ways. From the way they actually function both internally and externally, to the styles they compliment. There has been one thing, however, that has stayed consistent. Watches help us stay productive… hopefully.

Watches are not the only thing that have changed over the years. So has productivity. Technology affords us the opprotunity to be more productive than ever. It’s no wonder there has been much discussion around “smartwatches”, which essentially tie your smart phone to a digital watch.

iMagnet Cradle-less Universal Phone Mount with Quick-snap Technology

magnetic-phone-mountAlthough laws regarding cell phone use while driving vary from state to state, there is no doubt that using a hand held device while driving is becoming more and more frowned upon. But if you are anything like me you need your smartphone for GPS, music, and to talk (using Bluetooth of course). Personally I have always found the clamps you can install in your car annoying. They either don’t work very well or work so well that it is difficult to get your phone out of later. It becomes a real pain.

While seeking an alternative, I came across the iMagnet Cradle-less Universal Phone Mount with Quick-snap Technology. This phone holder works magnetically, simplifying the whole process. Don’t let the fact that it is magnetic make you question it’s ability to hold onto your phone.  The best part is, this mount is universal and works with just about all smart phones on the market!

Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones with Touch Control

The most advanced wireless headphones.

I have a confession to make. I am not the biggest fan of big headphones. I always tend to opt for ear buds instead. However, I would be lying if I said I wouldn’t be jealous of whoever gets these Parrot Zik Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones with Touch Control. The awesomeness these headphones possess far outweighs the fact that they are… well, bigger headphones. Here’s what makes these so cool.

Wireless: Who deals with wires anymore? They’re annoying, they get tangled, and often short out. These headphones allow you to connect wirelessly to your mobile device and stream audio. Watch the video for yourself and see how simple setup is.

Noise Cancelling: If you truly appreciate music and want to listen to every little intricate detail, you need noise cancelling headphones. Otherwise, you’re missing out. This high performance, noise cancelling system developed by Parrot claims to cancel eliminate up to 98% of ambient noise, using 4 microphones both inside and outside each earpiece. (Typical noise cancelling headphones use 2)

Touch Control: No doubt the coolest feature these headphones have, that that are touch controlled. Taping on the right headphone allows you to answer or end calls, while touching the panel for 2 seconds will reject an incoming call. Sliding your finger horizontally on the control panel allows you to switch between two calls. And of course, it is incredibly easy to switch songs and adjust the volume. Touch is the way of the future, are your headphones on board?

These headphones also have an automatic pause/play feature. You simple take the headphones off your head and they will pause. Set them back on your head and your audio is back in business.

An Awesome Gift Idea

These headphones are the perfect gift for that person that loves their music or audio book and are available in 4 different colors.

How to Adjust the Lens on Your Smart Phone

Camera sales are declining rapidly.

In fact, Businessweek wrote this last year:

Global camera sales are expected to fall 4.3 percent this year to 115.2 million units, according to market researcher IHS. Industrywide camera shipments fell 25 percent in August from a year earlier, according to the Camera & Imaging Products Association in Tokyo.

Another source claims that smartphones outsell cameras 10 to 1. Not surprising considering just about everyone has a smartphone nowadays. It is interesting to think that many children growing up today have never actually taken a picture with anything other than a smartphone, let alone remember what it is like getting film developed and storing negatives.

With this rise in popularity, smart phones continue to raise the bar when it comes to their ability to capture an insane amount of megapixels, not to mention the software that allows you to edit your photos and share them with friends and family instantly! One thing software can’t always do though is adjust your cameras lens… an option physical cameras typically give you.

Use Social Media to Find the Best Black Friday Deals

Every year, the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) marks the beginning of consumer madness.

If you have ever been Black Friday shopping, or even watched the madness on the news, you know that Black Friday shopping can be intenseAnticipation builds that days leading up to Black Friday, as stores begin to market their “in-store” Black Friday deals. Many enjoy the thrill of going shopping as soon as the stores open and battling the madness… for the rest of us, Social Media is a good way to find online Black Friday deals, even before the madness begins. Whether you are shopping online or looking for in-store deals, let’s consider how Twitter & Facebook, two of the most popular social media sites, can help you find awesome deals this Black Friday.

Using Twitter to Find Black Friday Deals

This one is simple. Twitter is all about #hashtags. So it shouldn’t be surprising that by searching the hashtag #blackfriday on twitter you can find a ton of awesome deals! The advantage that twitter has over other social media outlets, is that when you search the hashtag, you get a live feed of current deals. This means you are getting up to the minute deals. No need to worry about whether a deal has already expired!

Using Facebook to Find Black Friday Deals

It seems like Facebook is used by just about everyone in the family. This makes it a great place to share things, including deals. While twitter offers a great way to stay up to the minute on the best deals, Facebook can be a great place to discover deals your family and friends have already found and are sharing. If you don’t see anyone sharing any ideas, make a post asking if anyone has found any good deals online or in store. You’ll be surprised how many responses you will get!

Another way you can utilize Facebook to find Black Friday Deals is by heading over to Facebook Groups or Pages devoted to Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals. Many of these pages are updated frequently and give you a great visual of the deals out there. Additionally, follow your favorite stores Facebook pages to get their latest deals.

Download a QR Scanner/Bar Code Reader on Your Phone

Ok, so this one isn’t necessarily related to Social Media… but it will be very helpful when looking for the best deals. Having a bar code reader on your phone is especially important if you are planning on going out on Black Friday but also plan on making some online purchases. If you have an iPhone or Andriod device just go to the App Store or Google Play Store, respectively, and search for a bar code scanner. Then when you are shopping, scan bar codes and check if there are any better deals online. If there are, you will want to make the purchase quickly from your smart phone before it is gone! It may be a good idea to have a PayPal account set up in advance, as many online sellers accept PayPal and it will make your purchase quicker.

Have Fun and Be Safe!

Remember to shop safely and be respectful of others this Black Friday. Also keep checking back in with Men’s Tech for great deals!

Xbox One Released! How Did We Get Here?

Last Friday marked the release of Microsoft’s new gaming console,  the long anticipated follow-up to the Xbox 360, the Xbox One.

xboxoneFor years gaming systems have been primarily focused on graphics. Which makes sense. Graphics play a HUGE part in the gaming experience. However, over the last few years we have seen a huge push in integrating gaming consoles with web apps and streaming content from the internet. This made sense because people want access to their content on whatever device they are using. And if they have a gaming console that already connects to the internet for gaming, why shouldn’t they have the ability to stream content or access their Facebook page?

With the integration of gaming consoles and the internet, the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and even the Nintendo Wii became more than just gaming consoles. They became entertainment systems. In fact, at one point in time, I personally used my Xbox 360 to stream Netflix more than I used it for playing games.

When the Nintendo Wii was released, things got really interesting. Gaming became physically interactive. Another milestone that Sony and Microsoft took note of. The Xbox Kinect for the 360 was the next stage in physical interaction. The Kinect, of course, has the ability to pick up on users movements and even sounds without the need to hold a controller, something that has been re-engineered and improved upon with the Xbox One.

These and other advancements in gaming technology and user experience have led us to where we are today. The Xbox One has taken all of these concepts and built upon them, as I am sure the Playstation 4 will.

The Xbox One primarily builds upon the concept of voice control, TV, and social integration. We at Men’s Tech are excited to see how this gaming console war turns out.

More information on the Xbox One to come! If you have the Xbox One, let us know what you think!

The Easiest Way to Stream Content to Your TV

Ever find yourself wanting to watching something on your phone, tablet, or laptop and thinking, isn’t this what I have a nice high resolution TV for?

It seems like everyone has been trying to figure out the best way to stream content from your mobile device to your TV screen. We all love the convenience that our mobile devices afford us. We can instantly stream a YouTube video or even an entire movie using Netflix or Hulu Plus.TV

The Problem With Mobile Devices

There are a few problems, in my experience, when it comes to watching videos on my mobile devices. First of all, when I am at home and would like to watch internet content, I would rather do so on my 42 Inch HD television. After all, there is a reason I purchased a TV in the first place, right? Instead of inconveniently having to hold your device, it would be nicer to just sit back, relax, and watch your content on your TV. Also, I’ve found myself in situations where I have family and friends over and someone starts talking about a hilarious YouTube video that “everyone just HAS to see”. It is very inconvenient to have everyone crowd around a laptop, even one with a nice sized screen, not to mention the fact that no one can ever hear.

I’m sure you have your own moments when you just wish that you could take what was on your computer, tablet, or smartphone and broadcast it to you TV.

Smart TVs?

TV manufacturers have been trying to solve this problem for a while now. Many newer TV’s have WIFI built into it and will have apps that you can install and run, much like a smart phone or tablet. This is a good idea but it means if you want that convenience, you will need to go out and purchase a new TV. Even then, you really aren’t casting what you are already familiar with to your TV. It will likely take some learning to figure out the user interface of each app and I personally feel that controlling these apps with your remote control is, well, awkward.

Other Media Streaming Devices

TV manufacturers are not the only ones who have been working bridging this gap. Companies like Apple and Western Digital have been working on products like the Apple TV and the WD TV Live Streaming Media Player, respectively. These devices essentially turn your TV into a “smart TV”, giving it the ability to stream content.  Additonally, Apple TV integrates beautifully with other Apple devices. These devices add additional functionality to your TV and are certainly cheaper than buying a brand new TV.

Chromecast – The Simple Approach

Google has taken a different approach. With the lowest price tag of all the streaming devices ($35), Google Chromecast is certainly an interesting device. While other products have their own user interface and apps that connect to streaming services Chromecast does not. It simply streams content from the devices you already use to your TV.

Personally, when I first heard about Chromecast I was a bit indifferent. I thought it was just another streaming device, encouraging users to use the Android platform on TVs now. However, when I heard the device was being sold for $35, I preordered it right away. When I finally received my Chromecast, I was pleasantly surprised. Instead of being just another streaming device that encourages it’s own platform, Google viewed Chromecast as an opportunity to connect your already existing devices to your TV. You have the ability to cast a tab directly from Chrome on your computer, tablet, or smartphone to your TV. You can also stream movies from certain apps like Netflix.

chromecast1Chromecast is very simple to set up. Chromecast plugs into an HDMI port on your television and is powered by USB. Simply plug it in, power on your TV and, using any device with internet access, follow the provided instructions. It takes about 5 minutes and you are ready to start streaming content to your TV… FOR 35 DOLLARS.

Why Chromecast?

chromecastChromecast is awesome because it is simple. It has certainly taken the minimalist approach when it comes to streaming content to your TV. While other companies have tried to create a new product to stream content, Google has created a product to bridge the gap between your already existing products that you use every day.

If you want a simple product that takes the content on your computer, tablet, or smartphone and casts it on your TV… Google Chromecast is the perfect solution.

Should You Buy a Laptop or Tablet?

We have many options nowadays when it comes to computers.

Windows or Mac? Tablet, desktop, or laptop? Touchscreen or keyboard and mouse?

Really, theres no reason you can’t have them all in one device! At Men’s Tech, we love the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga. Simply because it is everything you need in one simple, easy to use device.

The Problem With Windows 8

Ever since the initial release of Windows 8, there has been plenty of negative feedback regarding the new ‘metro’ user interface. Many Windows users complain that they only use the desktop interface on their desktop, because the metro UI only proves useful on a touch screen tablet. Many devices, such as the Microsoft Surface have worked to bridge this gap by providing both a touch and desktop user experience, with little success in our opinion.

Problem Solved!

ideapag-yoga-laptopWhile the Surface may suit the needs of some, others may need their touch screen device to function as a laptop with a bigger screen. And while we are at it, a laptop that we could connect to a display, keyboard, and mouse, turning it into a fully functioning workstation.

Don’t get me wrong, many PC manufacturers have been doing this in one form or another. However, we use and highly recommend the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga.

WD TV Live Streaming Media Player Wi-Fi 1080p

Years ago the only way to enjoy television was to have cable or satellite. And while having cable and satellite certainly has many advantages, such as allowing you to stream live television, there are a few things it can’t do. One of them is streaming your personal media collection.

The solution? Western Digital offers an awesome live streaming media player! Personally I enjoy watching Netflix and Hulu Plus more than I enjoy live television. With this live streaming media player, not only can you stream your own media library, you can connect to Netflix, Hulu Plus, Facebook, and more! This gives you the ability to not only stay connected to your entertainment, but also your social media.

The Western Digital Streaming Media Player comes with built-in Wi-Fi, a really nice user interface, and streams in 1080p! If you decide you would like to stay physically connected, this media player also has a built in ethernet connection available.

This device is getting really awesome reviews from consumers.
